How to Change Background Color on Discord Desktop
Light and Dark Themes
The easiest way to change your background color on desktop Discord is to switch between the Light and Dark themes. Discord comes with these two pre-set themes that change the app’s background colors and some accent colors.
To change between Light and Dark themes:
- Click on the Settings icon (the gear shape) located on the bottom left of the Discord window.
- Select “Appearance” on the left sidebar.
- Under App Settings, choose either Light or Dark for the Theme.
- Click done, and your Discord background color will update to the chosen theme.
The Light theme has a white background with colored accents. The Dark theme uses a dark grey background with light text. Switching between these gives you a quick and easy way to modify Discord’s look.
Custom Themes with BetterDiscord
For more customization options, you’ll need to install the BetterDiscord mod. This opens up Discord to using custom created themes that overhaul the app’s colors and styles.
Here’s how to install and use custom Discord themes:
- Download and install BetterDiscord by following the steps on their website.
- Restart Discord. You’ll now see a “Themes” tab in your User Settings.
- Browse the available themes from the BetterDiscord community. There are thousands to choose from.
- Select a theme you like, then click Download. It will automatically apply to Discord.
- If you want to remove the custom theme, head back to User Settings -> Themes and click the “Revert to Default” button.
With custom themes, you can truly customize Discord’s look to match your style. Themes let you change colors, backgrounds, fonts, icons, and more. It’s an easy way to give Discord a fresh look.
How to Change the Background on Mobile
Similar to the desktop, you can quickly change the background color in mobile Discord by swapping Light and Dark modes.

- Select “Appearance”.

- Tap “Done” to apply the changes.

Custom Themes with BetterDiscord
The BetterDiscord add-on isn’t available for mobile devices. So, unfortunately, you can’t install custom themes on mobile Discord currently.
The only way to change background colors is to switch between the built-in Light and Dark modes. We can hope someday, BetterDiscord will release a mobile version to bring more custom themes to phones and tablets.
Nitro Subscriber Themes
Discord Nitro subscribers gain access to a selection of themes to change the background color and accent colors. There are around 16 different color themes to choose from.
To use Nitro themes:
- Open User Settings and select “Nitro” in the left sidebar.
- Scroll down to the “Themes” section.
- Preview and select the theme you want. The colors will automatically update.
These colorful themes are a nice perk for Nitro subscribers. However, the options are limited compared to BetterDiscord custom themes.
How to Customize Your Profile Page
Another area where you can customize the background color in Discord is on your profile page. This lets you set a banner, accent color, and background that shows on your public profile.
To customize your profile background and colors:
- Tap your profile picture, then “User Settings”.
- Select “User Profile” in the menu.
- Tap on your profile banner to upload a new image.
- Choose an accent color that will theme parts of your profile.
- Tap and hold on the background color square to pick a custom color.
- Select “Save Changes” when you’re done.
